While Lasers deliver a band of light energy that is monochromatic (one color), coherent (in phase) and collimated (one direction) Intense Pulse Light is delivered by a flash lamp and filters which generate a mixture of wavelengths that are not in phase.
While Intense Pulsed Light machines can be used for hair removal they are less effective than Lasers for that application. Where Intense Pulsed Light excels is in the treatment of reds, browns and facial rejuvenation. Intense pulsed light is thought to:
Tighten the skin. Shrink pores. Reverses sun damage and rough skin. Affect the disappearance of red lines and spots. Cause a decrease in fine lines and wrinkles, especially around eyes and lips. Cause fading of brown spots and freckles. Result in refinement and smoothing of skin texture. Decrease the overall skin redness from sun damage or Rosacea. Calm symptoms of Rosacea. Improve shallow acne scars and accompanying discoloration. Result in permanent reduction of dark facial hair. Decrease and slow the growth of fine, light facial hair.
IPL treatments are effective for sensitive, non-facial skin, such as the neck, chest, hands or arms, where deep laser resurfacing and strong chemical reels pose greater risks of scarring. For optimal results, a series of five to seven full-face pulsed light treatments are given at two to four week intervals. Recommendations are based on the individual’s desire for a certain level of skin rejuvenation and the condition of the skin at the time of the consultation.
